About the museum

The building itself can be entered and explored without buying museum admission. Tickets are required for the exhibitions, Sound Dome programmes, concerts and selected activities, so the headline price on this page is the ordinary full-price admission to the permanent Sound Dimensions exhibition rather than a charge for entering the building.

The House was designed by Sou Fujimoto and opened in January 2022. It is known for its large glass walls, an organically undulating roof, numerous roof openings and its integration with the surrounding park. Alongside the exhibitions it runs concerts, music education, family programmes and library and research functions; those are separate from the museum experience described here.

What to see

• Sound Dimensions

  The main interactive exhibition follows European and Hungarian music history through sound, film and hands-on installations, with headphones activating material as visitors move through the exhibition.

• Sound Dome

  A 360-degree projection dome uses spatial audio to present rotating audiovisual works, so the programme changes while the immersive venue remains a permanent part of the House.

• Creative Sound Space

  Eight interactive installations let visitors experiment directly with sound, rhythm, recording and unusual music-making systems.

• Creative Sound Space

  17 May 2022 – 31 December 2030 · Interactive installation / long-running experience · Creative Sound Space

  A hands-on music space built around eight large sound-generating installations where visitors can experiment with rhythm, recording, mechanical instruments and the relationship between sound, light and movement. Admission is in 60-minute slots and the museum recommends allowing about an hour.

• Freddie – the Exhibition

  1 May 2026 – 28 February 2027 · Temporary exhibition hall

  A temporary exhibition about Freddie Mercury combining hundreds of original personal objects, stage costumes, furniture and manuscripts with recollections from friends and colleagues across nine thematic spaces. Peter Freestone, Freddie Mercury's former personal assistant, appears through audio and video material. Entry is timed, visits may last up to two hours, and the museum does not recommend the exhibition for children under 6.

• DOME_021 Platon Karataev: Napkötöző

  30 July 2026 – 27 September 2026 · Sound Dome screening · Sound Dome

  A 22-minute audiovisual production in the Sound Dome, recommended for ages 6 and over. The songs are in Hungarian; the institution states that the language does not materially affect enjoyment of the audiovisual experience.

  Upcoming · From 10 September 2026 · The museum states only that it can be visited until January 2027 · Pop-up exhibition · Multimedia Library & Club

  A pop-up exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó, using photographs and letters from the family archive together with record covers and material relating to his career. Admission is free.

• Sound Dimensions – Musical Journey Through Space and Time

  Permanent exhibition · Permanent exhibition space / underground exhibition level

  An interactive exhibition tracing major developments in European and Hungarian music from early musical traditions through the twenty-first century, using sound, film, installations and an individual headphone-based visitor system. Entry is in 30-minute timed slots and the museum recommends 2–3 hours.

Each experience has its own schedule

Exhibition hours vary by experience; the general 10:00–18:00 (Fri–Sat 10:00–20:00) times are the ticket office and information desk hours. Sound Dimensions: Tue–Thu, Sat, Sun 10:15–17:50 with the ticket office closing and last admission at 16:15; Friday 10:15–19:50 with last admission 17:45; entry in 30-minute timed slots; recommended 2–3 hours, and the museum also notes visitors typically spend about two hours. Freddie – the Exhibition: Tue–Thu, Sun 10:00–18:30 with the latest start at 16:30; Fri–Sat 10:00–20:30 with the latest start at 18:30; late arrivals cannot be admitted because of the nature of the exhibition; visits may last up to two hours. Creative Sound Space: Tue–Thu, Sat, Sun 10:00–18:00 with last admission 16:30; Friday 10:00–20:00 with last admission 18:30; 60-minute slots starting every hour. Sound Dome: Tue–Thu, Sat, Sun 10:15–17:50 with the ticket office closing and the last screening at 17:00; Friday 10:15–19:50 with the last screening at 19:00; in addition to Mondays the Sound Dome alone is closed on the first Tuesday and the first Wednesday of every month, which does not close the museum or the permanent exhibition. Concerts may run outside these times and do not extend exhibition hours.

Permanent-exhibition listening system

Headphones required and supplied

Sound Dimensions relies on an integrated headphone and personal-navigation system. Headphones are supplied by staff at the exhibition entrance and are essential for experiencing the exhibition. Available in Hungarian, English, German and French. This is not a conventional optional audio guide.

Accessibility

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility

The institution states that the House of Music Hungary building is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Accessible routes are signposted inside the building, and staff at the information desk can provide assistance.

Cloakroom and lockers

Free and compulsory for exhibitions and events

The cloakroom or lockers are free, and their use is compulsory when visiting exhibitions, performances and events. Luggage, umbrellas, backpacks of any size and bags larger than 30 × 40 × 20 cm must be stored. No bag of any size may be worn on the back in exhibition or event areas; a small backpack may only be carried on the front or by hand where permitted. Exhibitions may not be visited while wearing a coat. Lockers take a 100 HUF coin, which is returned after use. The ground-floor cloakroom is closed each year from 1 July to 31 August, when lockers are used instead.

Photography and video

Personal amateur photography permitted in exhibitions

The current House Rules permit amateur photography for private, non-commercial purposes in exhibitions, together with amateur video clips of up to 30 seconds. Other photography or recording, and any other use, requires prior permission; commercial use requires permission. In the general building areas outside exhibitions and performances, personal amateur photo and video is permitted for private non-commercial use but flash, tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. During performances, recording devices and mobile phones may not be used.

Children and families

Under-14s must be accompanied by an adult

Visitors under 14 may only be in House of Music Hungary under adult supervision. The institution describes the permanent exhibition as having no general age limit, and it runs family and children's music programmes for several age groups. Freddie – the Exhibition is not recommended for children under 6.

Animals

Assistance dogs permitted

The current visitor house rules prohibit live animals with the exception of assistance dogs.

Food and drink

Café and Trilla Bistro available; not permitted in exhibitions

A café and Trilla Bistro operate inside the building. Exhibition areas may not be entered with bottles, food or drinks. The institution's English and Hungarian pages publish different hospitality schedules, including event-dependent arrangements, so no café or bistro hours are listed here.

Gift shop

Tue–Thu and Sun 10:00–18:00, Fri–Sat 10:00–20:00

The shop carries music-related publications and recordings together with work by Hungarian designers and artists. Closed on Mondays. Contact: +36 30 461 5115, shop@zenehaza.hu.

Tickets and discounts

Online through the official Liget+ system

The building itself can be entered without museum admission; tickets are required for exhibitions, Sound Dome programmes, concerts and selected activities. Tickets are sold through the official Liget Budapest ticketing system. A valid Budapest Card gives a 20% discount on admission to the permanent exhibition and the Sound Dome; it does not give free admission and does not automatically apply to Freddie – the Exhibition, the Creative Sound Space, concerts, building tours or other temporary exhibitions. Registered Liget+ members receive a 10% discount on the first full-price online ticket bought for participating permanent exhibitions and newly opened temporary exhibitions; that is a membership benefit, not the ordinary public price.

Guided tours

Building tour 4,500 HUF per person, booked through Liget Budapest

The guided tour of the House of Music Hungary explores the architecture and the building and costs 4,500 HUF per person. It does not include admission to the permanent exhibition or the Sound Dome. Group building tours take 15 to 25 participants with advance registration up to three days before the advertised date, at ligetsetak@ligetbudapest.hu. The institution also schedules thematic and children's tours of the permanent exhibition.

Parking

Museum Underground Car Park, entered from Dózsa György út

The approximately 800-space Museum Underground Car Park (Múzeum Mélygarázs) is the official visitor garage. Visitors who buy eligible tickets online while logged in to a free Liget+ account can receive two hours of free parking on the day of the visit under the current validation rules; the benefit depends on that registration. Cycle racks are available in front of the building.
