House of Terror Museum

About the museum

Opened in 2002 at 60 Andrássy Avenue, the museum occupies a building used in turn by the Arrow Cross movement and by the communist political police. Its permanent exhibition follows Hungary's twentieth-century dictatorships chronologically, from Nazi occupation and Arrow Cross rule through Soviet occupation and the communist decades.

The route begins on the second floor and continues down through the building; the basement holds reconstructed detention and punishment cells, together with rooms on internment, the 1956 Revolution, retaliation and emigration. Photography and video are not permitted in the exhibition, apart from the tank on the ground floor.

What to see

• The Permanent Exhibition

  The main exhibition begins on the second floor and follows a chronological route through Hungary's twentieth-century dictatorships, beginning with Nazi occupation and Arrow Cross rule and continuing through Soviet occupation and the communist period.

• The Tank and Victims' Memorial

  A Soviet T-54 tank stands in the museum's central ground-floor space beside a memorial installation displaying photographs of victims of Nazi and communist persecution.

• Reconstructed Prison Cells

  The basement contains reconstructed detention and punishment cells based on surviving testimony about the building's use by the Arrow Cross and later communist political police, alongside exhibition rooms dealing with internment, the 1956 Revolution, retaliation and emigration.

  An exhibition of works by Hungarian-American artist Sam Havadtoy examining themes connected with Lenin, Stalin, Soviet communism and the manipulation and reinterpretation of political imagery.

• We Made World History 1956–2026

  2026

  A photographic exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight, presenting original photographs from the House of Terror Museum's collection documenting the uprising.

• Forcing the memory of my trauma onto canvas

  2026

  A selection of paintings and drawings by József Ringhoffer depicting the 1953 prisoner uprising at the forced-labour camp in Tiszalök, where he had been detained.

Practical information

Tickets

Sold at the museum ticket desk only.

There is no online ticket purchase. Tickets are bought in person at the museum, and the ticket desk closes at 17:30.

Photography

Photography and video are prohibited in the exhibition.

Visitors may not take photographs or record video inside the exhibition, with the exception of the tank on the ground floor.

Cloakroom and bags

Free cloakroom required for certain items.

Luggage, umbrellas, bags larger than A3 size and all backpacks must be deposited in the cloakroom. Lockers for bags and smaller coats are free but require a 100 HUF coin.

Food and drink

Food prohibited in exhibition areas.

Food may not be brought into the exhibition area. Drinks are permitted only in a tightly closed bottle.

Children

Children permitted with supervision.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Parents, guardians and group leaders are responsible for children's supervision and behaviour inside the museum.

Audio guide

Audio guides available, 2,000 HUF.

Available at the museum without advance booking in English, German, Spanish, Russian, French and Italian, and charged in addition to museum admission.

Guided tours

English guided tours available for groups by advance booking.

English-language guided tours cost 20,000 HUF per group for 10–30 people. Tours are subject to availability and must be booked at least 10 days before the visit.

Museum app

Free official museum app available.

The official House of Terror Museum app provides additional guidance through the museum's rooms and exhibits and is available free through the App Store and Google Play.

Assistance dogs

Permitted when appropriately identified.

Assistance dogs with distinctive identification are exempt from the museum's general prohibition on animals. The museum does not currently publish detailed step-free access information.

Bookstore

Museum bookstore accessible without museum admission.

The museum states that admission to its bookstore is free of charge.
