About the museum

The Ludwig Museum occupies three floors in the west wing of Müpa Budapest. Müpa is the host cultural building; the museum is a separate institution inside it.

Founded in 1989, it was the first Ludwig institution established beyond the former Iron Curtain. Its international collection was built around works donated and deposited by Peter and Irene Ludwig, in which American Pop Art is a significant historical strength.

Alongside that international core, the museum has a defining Hungarian and Central and Eastern European contemporary-art focus, and its holdings have grown to more than a thousand items since its foundation.

What to see

• American Pop Art

  The Ludwig collection is particularly strong in American Pop Art. Its holdings include works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg, reflecting the collection built by Peter and Irene Ludwig. Individual works rotate and are not permanently on view.

• Central and Eastern European art

  A defining strength of the museum is its Central and Eastern European perspective, placing Hungarian art from the second half of the twentieth century onward in dialogue with artists from across the region and the wider international art scene.

• BING BANG collection display

  The current long-running collection display explores how the Ludwig Museum's holdings have grown and changed, combining acquisition history with thematic sections ranging from Pop and conceptual art to street art, movement and ecological practice. Shown until 10 January 2027.

  A large collection display tracing the development and expansion of the Ludwig Museum's holdings through chronological and thematic sections covering subjects including pop culture, conceptual art, hyperrealism, street art, machines and movement, and ecological art, in twelve thematic units.

• Black Mirror. The Long Shadow of the Future

  A thematic selection of approximately 90 works examining dystopian visions, technology, ideology, urban space, identity and imagined futures through works from and around the Ludwig Museum's collection. Subtitle: Thematic Selection from the Ludwig Museum's Collection.

• Walk This Way. The Art of Walking

  Upcoming · 9 October 2026 – 31 January 2027 · Temporary exhibition; international group exhibition

  An international group exhibition examining walking as an artistic form, narrative device and critical practice, including its connections with mapping, performance, urban space, activism and ecological and social questions.

Fully accessible

The museum states that the entire building and all of its exhibition spaces are fully accessible: a barrier-free entrance is provided and every floor can be reached by elevator. Designated accessible parking spaces are available in the Müpa underground garage. A wheelchair can be borrowed free of charge at the Information Desk, and advance reservation is requested: infopult@ludwigmuseum.hu, +36 1 555 3444. Inclusive educational programmes are available with advance registration. Müpa states that several restroom facilities in the building are barrier-free and that no induction loop is available.

Bags and cloakroom

Coats, umbrellas and bags must be left outside the exhibitions

Automatic lockers take a 100 HUF coin, which is returned after use. There is a cloakroom for coats beside the Museum Information Desk, and a separate group cloakroom beside it. The museum publishes no bag-size limit.

Professional and media photography

Prior permission required

The museum operates a formal permission procedure for professional, press, reporting, filming and photography work: pr@ludwigmuseum.hu. Separate copyright permission may be required to reproduce artworks commercially. The museum publishes no rule for ordinary visitor photography, so none is stated here.

Visiting with children

Children under 6 enter free

Family tickets are sold, and qualifying EEA family groups can use the museum's published 50% concession. Family and children's museum-education programmes are offered, and the accessibility programmes include activities for visitors with learning difficulties. Müpa states that the building is barrier-free for visitors with strollers; the museum publishes no separate stroller rule for its exhibition spaces.

Café in Müpa

P’Art Café and Bistro

A café and bistro operates inside the Müpa Budapest building, not run by the museum. Müpa publishes café hours of 10:00–18:00 on Mondays and 10:00–20:00 Tuesday to Sunday on days without events; on event days it opens at 10:00 and stays open after the event. These are host-building hours and do not change museum opening times.

Available in the Müpa building

Müpa Budapest has restroom facilities and states that several of them are barrier-free. The museum does not publish a restroom location inside its own exhibition area.

Museum shop

First floor, no exhibition ticket needed

The Ludwig Museum Shop sells the museum's own publications, exhibition catalogues, art books and magazines, prints, postcards and objects by Hungarian designers. MyLUMU digital companion

Interactive web application and virtual assistant

MyLUMU is the museum's QR-based digital exhibition companion. QR codes beside selected artworks provide additional content and, in some cases, interactive material. Its virtual assistant, Mona, answers text questions and can read MyLUMU texts aloud. It covers selected supported exhibitions and content rather than every artwork.

For groups under 10 people: 12,000 HUF per group in Hungarian, 15,000 HUF per group in other languages, in addition to exhibition admission. Buying tickets

Ticket office 10:00–19:30, Tuesday to Sunday

Tickets are sold at the museum and through the museum's own online ticket portal. Ticket sales close at 19:30; the museum publishes no general last-admission time. Tickets are exhibition-based, so a single 3,300 HUF ticket admits you to one exhibition; the 6,600 HUF combined ticket covers all current exhibitions.

Parking and cycling

Underground garage in the Müpa building

Müpa Budapest has a multi-level underground garage, including designated accessible spaces; conditions and tariffs are set by Müpa. The Danube cycle route reaches the museum area, with bicycle racks and a public bike-share docking station nearby.
